Kumalak

Kumalak was applied to Kazakhstan, in Central Asia, during thousands of years. The local shaman, named “bhalcha”, draws starting from 41 broad beans, coffee beans or beans, drawn from a bag. It sorts and separates beans, then the étand on a grid drawn on a fabric. The “teller”, named “shakerjan”, ends up having 3 lines of 3 groups. Each group of beans will contain 1,2,3 or 4 beans. Each combination is codified and refers to the past, the present and the future of the consultant.

The grid of kumalak represents a traditional Kazakh rider of the steppes, each box corresponding to part of the body.  : The first line describes the past: the second line describes the present: the third line describes the future

The particular number of beans in a place represents natural elements.

 To fill the boxes = First line: You start by leaving 41 beans the bag: You divide them into 3 piles: You take the pile of with dimensions right: You draw aside 4 beans at the same time as long as there is more than 4: You put these beans in the right higher box of the grid of Kumalak: You made the same thing with the pile of the center: Then finally, you finish by the pile of left

= Second line: You take again all beans not used to make a new pile of it: You divide this pile into 3 new piles: You fill the 3 boxes mediums as for the higher line = Troisième: Even thing that for the 2 others

 Significance of the number of grains

1	to bir	associated with fire (fire: ates), it symbolizes the action, clearness and the combat
2	iki	associated with water (water: suw), it represents two faces, or good or bad. It symbolyse the tension and imbalance
3	üsh	associated with the air (wind: ruzgar), it represents the 3 kingdoms of nature (animal, plant and mineral) and symbolizes the voyages, the meetings and the union of the forces
4	wrong	associated with the ground (sand: kum), it symbolizes the richness and the possessions but also the darkness.
